Summer Fun and Fall Classes Begin

I trust everyone had a wonderful summer! We had a joyful, productive summer at The Sewing School. There were weekly camps, beginner sewing machine clinics, a few adult and teen classes and most fun of all, our Monster making classes. From what I've heard several Monsters have reached "show and tell" stardom these first few weeks of school. Sewing a Monster remains in high demand!!!
With the school year already underway, this is a good time to register for Fall sewing classes. This is the second year for The Sewing School and it's going to be a great year. To the schedule for this year I've added, due to popular requests, a few adult classes.
New students are always welcome. If your child has a friend who might be interested in attending The Sewing School, please encourage them to join as we begin our Fall classes.
Classes for the Fall begin the week of Labor Day and will continue until the Christmas holidays. At that time, you will be able to register for the Spring classes, which will begin in early January.
I hope to hear from you soon!

Spring sessions close...Hooray for Summer!!!

As the school year comes to a close so does The Sewing School sessions. It's been a fabulous and rewarding year for The Sewing School. Many "little women" have come through the door and left with happy, smiling faces, beaming with pride of their adorable handmade projects as their parents also took much delight in the progress their children had made.

October 2009, The Sewing School started on a whim and a desire to share my passion for sewing. Each week I've been inspired by my student's spirit, interest and love for the craft to create interesting, unique projects compatible with each child's skill level.
I look forward to Summer 2010 classes and continung the after school classes in the fall of 2010.
I have many great ideas and projects planned for the fall and a special community service project I can't wait to get the students started on.

I offer my heart felt thanks to all who have supported, encouraged and inspired me this year. To my super talented daughter, Claudia, thank you for all of your behind the scenes technical support and thanks to Robin, my sweet friend, for helping spread the word and for actually recruiting my first class of "little women".
A very special thanks to all the moms, with their super busy schedules, for giving me the opportunity to introduce this waning art to your children. I pray they have learned a few skills to last them a lifetime and I hope they fondly remember Ms. Cathy and The Sewing School for many years to come.
If you are interested in Summer classes please give me a call. This is a good thing, let's keep it going!!!

Wrapped Up Winter Sessions. Hopping Into Spring

We've wrapped up our winter session, headed into spring making precious bunny rabbits, piggies and green shamrocks. Two classes have begun basic embroidery techniques and another class is about to embark on learning stitch applications for garment construction. These children are amazingly talented. I am so proud of the progress they've made in just a short time. Parents are also amazed and proud of their progress. I have so many moms say how much they, themselves, wished they had learned to sew. I enjoy teaching the children the skills I learned at a young age and still enjoy using today.

I'm learning new things too...I've found it's best to offer after school sewing class schedules parallel to local school districts yearly schedules.

Spring classes begin March 29th and will continue until May 20th. Plans are for a few summer camp offerings which I will post info about later. Thanks for reading my blog and keeping up with the latest news. Come join us, we have sew much fun at The Sewing School!!!

You want us to do what, Ms. Cathy?

I somewhat introduced my Level II Thursday class to embroidery. I was a bit jaded with my efforts and I think the students were too. The concept flew right over their heads and for the first time I lost their attention.
I spent most of the evening fretting over my failed attempt to teach them to the idea of making stitches in tiny little squares printed on fabric. I'm not sure any of them grasped the concept. This was a huge leap of faith!
Embroidery is a bit more in depth and tedious than the little shapes they're accustomed to sewing. So, I went back to the drawing board and devised a more clear and precise technique for teaching embroidery. I'm confident my idea will hold their attention long enough for them to grasp the concept. I know they will love it once they get it!!!

Expansion Needed

It's exciting to think I may need to expand sooner than I thought. With the beginning of each new session more students are enrolling and I receive more inquiries. It seems the word on the streets these days is "The Sewing School". My sweet "little women" are shouting praises from the rooftops. I'm so blessed to be the hot topic in this neck of the woods. I have students, parents, teachers and those who wish they had girls singing praises for my renewing an interest in an age old craft which has skipped a couple of generations.

Boys are also welcome to learn to sew...in the north, boys learn to sew; here, not so much...it must be a Southern thing!!! However, I have a neighbor friend who said he learned to sew from his grandmother...he sews all the time. His wife doesn't know how to sew! I thought his story was so cute! My three brothers sew! My youngest brother is a skilled craftsman, has been making leather purses, wallets and shoes for many years. In 1938, my dad hand sewed my sister's first little dress out of fabric from the Olympia Cotton Mills. How sweet is that?

At this late date in my life I never dreamed something so wonderful as The Sewing School would come from an art I learned many years ago. I can simply say this is wonderful and I love it! I truly thank everyone for their love and support!

New Year, New Classes, Lots of Fun!!!

The four week schedule is working out for everyone. The parents like this because there are options available for their busy schedules. Our Thursday class has been busy making beautiful Valentine hearts and learning to sew on buttons. They are such a happy group of little women and a pleasure to teach.

Our Monday class is doing quite well. They have caught the sewing bug too. They've asked me to ask their parents if they could come sew everyday! Well, wouldn't that be nice? They've finished a little bird and a beautiful Valentine heart accented with a satin bow. One student, so proud of her little birdie, took it for show and tell at her school. They too, are so talented and such a pleasure to teach. I love all of my little women!

Our next four week session will begin Tuesday, February 9th. We're also planning summer camps, so stay in touch. Come join us, we have so much fun at The Sewing School!!!

Classes Have Resumed

I was so happy to see my "little women" for our Thursday class. They were so excited to be back and shared all of their holiday happenings with me. All of them "sewed" a gift for someone during their break.

Each student chose their own project to work on. Currently, we have an alligator, a heart and two teddy bears. All are working at their own pace and very comfortable doing so. I could certainly see they had practiced during their holiday break.

I'm looking forward to my Monday class which begins on the 18th.

Call and schedule a class for your child or your group. We'll be happy to set up a specific time for you..we have so much fun! Come, join us! "any day spent sewing is a good day"!!!

Thanks, and best stitches

Happy New Year from The Sewing School

Happy New Year! I hope all of you had a very happy holiday season and are settling in for the New Year 2010.

We wrapped up the fall season prior to Christmas break. I'm very proud of the little women in my sewing school. They are amazingly talented and eager to learn more. I presented each of them with a sewing kit box with several projects to keep them busy during the holiday break.

I'm looking forward to the winter session classes to begin the second week in January. If you haven't signed up for a class please do so or call me regarding schedules and I'll be more than happy to personalize a class for any group. Monday through Friday, classes begin at 3 pm.

I'm also excited to be working with Richland County Recreation Commission offering classes on Mondays at 4 pm, Trenholm Park in Forest Acres, beginning Jan. 18. If that time frame suits your schedule, call the park and register for the class.

2010 is going to be an exciting year for The Sewing School. My goal for this year is to eventually open an actual school...complete with sewing necessities, fabrics, tools and many, many classes offered through out the week. Summer camps are in the works, too!

Thanks for your support and trust! I look forward to seeing you soon!
